Creamy Salmon Pasta | No Cheese, Family Friendly

This creamy salmon pasta is officially the only way we can get our daughter to eat salmon.

I used to make a salmon pasta recipe by Jamie Oliver, but my husband isn’t a cheese fan, so I started changing things around. After a few attempts, this version became the clear winner — creamy, lemony, comforting, and completely without cheese.

If you’re looking for an easy family dinner that feels a little special without being difficult, this one genuinely works in real family kitchens. It’s also flexible enough to adapt for different dietary needs, which makes dinner feel much easier on busy nights.

LOW EFFORT

FAMILY FRIENDLY

LOW STRESS

NUTRITIOUS

ADAPTABLE

This recipe came from trying to solve two problems at once: get our daughter to eat salmon and make something my husband would actually enjoy. Turns out, skipping the cheese and keeping the sauce creamy with lemon, cream, and pasta water was the answer. And in true real-life dinner fashion, I had broccoli in the fridge that needed using, so I threw that in too. It’s exactly the kind of flexible meal that works with what you’ve got.

Why This Creamy Salmon Pasta Recipe Works

This Creamy Salmon Pasta is an easy family dinner with salmon fillets, spinach, lemon and a creamy sauce.

  • Salmon is high in protein, which helps to keep everyone fuller for longer.
  • Salmon is rich in omega-3 fats that support brain function, heart health, and growing bodies.
  • Spinach contains iron and folate for an easy nutritious boost
  • The creamy sauce makes it satisfying, while lemon keeps it feeling fresh instead of heavy.
  • Reheats well for lunch the next day with a splash of water or milk to loosen the sauce

Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to make this Creamy Salmon Pasta at home.

  • 250g red lentil pasta – We use a box of San Remo red lentil pasta for extra protein.
  • 460g salmon, skinless – Fresh salmon works beautifully here. You can cook it in the air fryer or straight in the pan.
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or butter – For cooking.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced – Adds flavour without overpowering the salmon.
  • ¾ cup thickened cream – Creates the creamy base without needing cheese.
  • ½–1 cup reserved pasta water – This is what actually helps create a silky sauce rather than a heavy one.
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard – Not enough to taste “mustardy” — just enough to add depth.
  • 1 lemon (zest + 1–2 tbsp juice) – Freshens everything up and balances the creaminess. Add juice at the end to prevent the cream from curdling.
  • 2 cups baby spinach – Easy extra veg that wilts straight into the sauce.
  • 1–2 cups broccoli florets (optional) – Perfect for adding extra veg or using up what’s already in the fridge. Steam it, roast it, or stir it straight through.
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley – Adds freshness at the end.
  • Salt and pepper – To taste.

💡Tip: Run your fingers over the salmon fillet before cooking to check for bones.

Step-by-Step Instructions

This Creamy Salmon Pasta is quick and easy, making it ideal for busy weeknights.

Conventional Method

  1. Cook pasta in salted water and reserve 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
  2. Cook salmon. We usually do this in the air fryer for convenience, but pan cooking works perfectly too. Flake into chunks.
  3. Heat oil or butter in a large pan and cook garlic for 30–60 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add cream, Dijon mustard, and lemon zest. Stir gently over low heat.
  5. Stir through spinach until wilted.
  6. Add pasta and salmon. Toss everything together, adding pasta water in small amounts if needed.
  7. Turn heat off and stir through lemon juice and parsley.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

💡Tip: Add the pasta water slowly until you get a silky sauce that coats the pasta – not thick and gloopy.

Thermomix Method

  1. Add the garlic to the Thermomix bowl and chop for 5 seconds / speed 7. Scrape down the sides.
  2. Add the olive oil or butter and cook for 2 minutes / 100°C / speed 1.
  3. If using raw salmon, add it to the bowl and cook for 6 minutes / 100°C / reverse / speed soft, until just cooked. Break into chunks gently with the spatula. If using pre-cooked or air-fried salmon, skip this step and add it at the end instead.
  4. Add the cream, Dijon mustard, and lemon zest. Cook for 3 minutes / 90°C / reverse / speed 2 until the sauce is smooth and combined.
  5. Add the baby spinach and cook for 1 minute / 90°C / reverse / speed soft until just wilted.
  6. Add the cooked pasta, salmon (if using pre-cooked), lemon juice, and parsley. Mix for 30 seconds / reverse / speed soft until everything is coated in the sauce.
  7. Add the pasta water slowly until the sauce is smooth and silky.
  8. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

💡Tip: Cook the pasta separately while the sauce is cooking to keep dinner moving faster and everything ready at the same time.

Creamy Salmon Pasta

This creamy salmon pasta recipe is family-friendly, easy to adapt, and made without cheese. A flexible gluten free dinner option.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: Modern Family-Friendly

Ingredients

  • 250 g red lentil pasta (I use San Remo red lentil pasta)
  • 460 g salmon fillets skin off
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or butter
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ¾ cup thickened cream
  • 1 cup reserved pasta water
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 cups baby spinach leaves
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley leaves chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Cook the pasta in well-salted water as per packet instructions, or until al dente. Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
  2. Cook the salmon using your preferred method. We usually use the air fryer for convenience, but pan cooking works just as well. Once cooked, flake the salmon into large chunks and set aside.
  3. In a large pan, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 30–60 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to brown it.
  4. Reduce the heat and stir through the cream, Dijon mustard, and lemon zest until the sauce is smooth and combined. A whisk can help to combine the mustard well.
  5. Add the spinach and gently stir until just wilted.
  6. Add the cooked pasta and salmon, tossing everything together to coat in the sauce. Add reserved pasta water a little at a time until the sauce becomes silky and clings to the pasta.
  7. The goal is a silky and smooth sauce, not gluggy.
  8. Turn the heat off, then stir through the lemon juice and fresh parsley.
  9. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Leftover salmon works really well in this recipe and makes dinner even quicker. Just flake it through at the end so it doesn’t dry out.

Not if you add it at the end with the heat off. This keeps the sauce smooth and creamy while giving it that fresh lemon flavour.

Short pasta like penne, spirals, or shells works best because it holds onto the sauce well. You can also use gluten free, red lentil, or regular pasta depending on what suits your family.

Absolutely. This recipe is very flexible. Broccoli, peas, zucchini, asparagus, or green beans all work well and are great for using up what’s already in the fridge.

Yes. Swap the cream for your favourite dairy free cooking cream or coconut cream. Oat cream gives the closest result if you want to keep the flavour mild.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat gently with a splash of water or milk to loosen the sauce.

Yes. Tinned salmon is a great budget-friendly option and works well in this creamy salmon pasta. Drain it well and stir it through at the end so it holds its texture.

Very. The sauce is mild, creamy, and not overly “fishy” or cheesy, which makes it a good option for kids who are unsure about salmon.

Yes. The Dijon mustard adds depth, but it’s subtle. You can leave it out and the recipe will still be creamy and full of flavour.

It works well on its own, but garlic bread, a simple salad, or extra steamed vegetables are all easy sides that work in real family meals.
